The debut album from young British singer, Lily Allen is not likely to cause the stir in the U.S. that it has caused in Europe, but the album is sure to leave a notable mark in the annals of pop music history. Rising from relative obscurity; Allen has reached superstardom in the U.K. with the debut release of her pop gem Alright, Still. British pop music is having its most creative surge of hits since the early 1980's.
Allen's twice platinum CD, Alright Still has spawned the number one UK smash-hit, Smile, which admittedly is still relatively unknown to U.S. audiences but the catchy upbeat pop tune has enjoyed wild popularity on Allen's MySpace page. Undoubtedly, the second best, though wildly neglected, single on the album is a catchy little 60-ish gem entitled Everything's Just Wonderful.
Allen's lyrics are sassy, urban poetic and earnest and with a voice that delicately hides mild operatic octaves, dressed in the likes of a Gwen Stefani or a Nelly Fertado, Allen is most assuredly destined for even bigger and better things in the future. Alright, Still has attitude, style and a definitive theme about a woman's joyful right to chart her own course through life. And that's just about enough to make anybody smile. B+
